2010 Navazos Niepoort Vino Blanco - Jerez de la Frontera, Spain 12.3% abv
This peculiar white wine is a collaboration project between sherry explorers Equipo Navazos and Port house Niepoort. The wine is made from Palomino grapes that are grown on the same chalky Albariza soils of Jerez that breathe life into sherry. Unlike sherry, this wine is unfortified and is quite light in alcohol at 12.3% abv. Like sherry, the wine is aged under a unique 'flor' veil which protects the wine from oxidation and imparts a unique taste.
The wine is predominantly earthy and references typical Fino sherry characters quite strongly. Aromas of crushed granite, oyster shell, lemon zest and struck match billow from the glass. The palate is surprisingly soft. The texture is generous with a round acidity which keeps the wine in check. The back of the palate broadens with acacia and honeysuckle notes. A typically old world wine, it lends particularly well to consumption with scallops. Think about scallops that are pan-seared in butter and finished with a squeeze of lemon juice. Serve the wine at 12 degrees to bring out it's acidity and enjoy in a narrow-stemmed glass.
